Three Approved Curbside Mailbox Styles
There are three approved styles of curbside mailboxes, Traditional, Contemporary and Locked, full or limited service. Customers must use one of these approved curbside mailboxes for new installations or replacements. Your postmaster will need to ensure you are using delivery equipment approved by the postmaster general. However, you can use a custom-built curbside mailbox IF your local postmaster gives prior approval AND your custom-built mailbox generally conforms to the same requirements as approved manufactured curbside mailboxes in terms of the flag, size, strength and quality of construction.
Keep Size in Mind when Choosing your Mailbox
Consider the types of mail and packages you tend to receive. Your mailbox is where your Postal Service carrier is going to deliver your mail and small-medium sized packages. Having a mailbox that accommodates small packages will provide protection from inclement weather and keep your packages from sitting out in the open. When a package doesn’t fit in your mailbox, often times it is left on your doorstep. If your mail provider can fit your package in your mailbox, this provides an ideal solution for both of you. Also, if you tend to send out packages often, a mailbox large enough for packages to be placed inside can provide you the convenience of utilizing the USPS free Carrier Pickup program. Your postal carrier can pick up your outgoing packages when delivering your mail, saving you gas and time.
